 BABY FOUND IN CARDBOARD BOX

HANDSWORTH HERALD  July 12th 1905

On Tuesday the body of a baby was found in a cardboard box in the Aldridge Road and the inquest held by H.A. Pearson, Coroner for South Staffordshire on Wednesday evening at the Police court, Thornhill Road, Handsworth, failed to throw any light upon the matter.   The first witness was Agnes Childs, aged 13 years, of back of 48 Alma Street, Aston and she said about 5.30 on Tuesday she was going along the Aldridge Road in company with her mother Kate Thompson when she saw a brown paper parcel behind the wall, close to the house of Mr Thomas Cumberland.  On opening the parcel they found a cardboard box inside and in that was the body of a dead child.  Her mother called the attention of a man who got a youth passing with a trap to remove it to the Police Station at Perry Barr.  Mrs Kate Thompson, wife of Geo. Thompson, 4 back of 48 Alma Street said she first had her suspicions aroused by seeing a baby’s hand protruding from the box.  Thomas Ash, grocer’s porter, 165 Wellington Road, said he removed the body in his trap to the Police Station.

Police Constable Wright said he received the body and was present at the post mortem examination on Wednesday.

Dr. Adamson of Birchfield Road said the body was that of a female child, fully developed.  The head and neck were very much decomposed.  There was a wound on the neck which must have been before death.  No skilful attention had been given at the time of birth.  The child had been alive at the time of birth, but he could not say exactly if it had a separate existence.  Death was due to strangulation, which opinion be formed from the appearance of the body.  He believe that the child had been dead for more than a month.

In answer to Superintendent Pilliner, the witness said that he could not say whether the child had been strangled before or after its separation from its mother.  He did not think it was accidentally strangled.  The coroner in summing up thought there was not sufficient evidence to bring in a verdict of willful murder against a person or persons unknown.    The jury returned a verdict to the effect that the child had died from strangulation, but when this occurred there was no evidence to show.

HANDSWORTH HERALD                                                        5TH MAY 1900

SUDDEN DEATH OF A HANDSWORTH CARTER

Mr. H. A. Pearson, coroner for South Staffordshire, held an inquest at the Police Station, Thornhill Road, Handsworth on Saturday, respecting the date of George Badham (52) Green Lane.

Henry Badham, shopfitter, 127 Moor Street, Birmingham said deceased, who was his brother, was a carter in his employ. As a general thing his brother’s health was good, but about nine months ago he had an attack of bronchitis.  On Thursday (the 26th ult) he was apparently well and cheerful.  About 2.45 pm they drove together in a spring van to Mr. Greensill’s, Aldridge Road, Perry Barr.  Witness went into the house and deceased remained in charge of the van.  When witness left him, he was sitting on the side of the conveyance smoking his pipe.  About half an hour later witness’s attention was called to the fact that a crowd had collected round the van.  He at once went there and found deceased lying at the bottom of the van in an unconscious condition.  Deceased was taken as promptly as possible to Dr May’s surgery in Birchfield Road, but he never recovered consciousness and was dead on arrival.  The unfortunate man, who was perfectly sober, had apparently fallen out of the wagon whilst asleep.

Ann Poytree, the Malt House, Queslett, stated that on Thursday the 26th ult, about 3 – 15 pm she was passing Mr. Greensill’s house in Aldridge Road and noticed deceased asleep on the side of the wagon.  When she had gone about a dozen yards she turned round and saw him lying backwards on the curb.  The horse and cart appeared to be in exactly the same position as when she passed.  One of the deceased legs was resting against the wheel.

Mr William John Fitter, organ grinder, 23, Bartholomew Street, who was grinding an organ outside the Boar’s Head on the afternoon in question, and who assisted the last witness in placing deceased in the cart, also gave evidence.

Dr May, medical officer of health for Aston Manor, said deceased was brought to his house about 3 – 30 in the afternoon.  He was quite dead, and had been so, apparently for about half an hour.  The post mortem examination disclosed no marks of violence.  The neck was discoloured, but this was due to post mortem causes.  There were no fractures of any kind.  The heart showed traces of an old standing disease of mitral valve.  The wall of the right ventricle was rather thin; the liver and kidneys were very much congested; the stomach was congested; the lungs were normal, and there were no traces of bronchitis.  The cause of death originated in syncope, and way possibly accelerated by sitting in a doubled-up position.  The fall had nothing to do with the death.

Police constable Elks, deposed to making the usual inquiries.

The Coroner in summing up, pointed out that the supposition that deceased had broken his neck by a fall originated in the post mortem discolourations.

The jury returned a verdict in accordance with medical evidence.
