HANDSWORTH HERALD                                        ANUARY 28TH 1895

SUDDEN DEATH OF MR. J. N. BROWN

It is with feelings of regret that we record the painfully sudden death of Mr. John Nurthal Brown of Anglesey House, Wellington Road, the Chairman of the board of directors of the Birmingham and District Bank, Colmore Row.  On Monday afternoon the deceased gentleman who was well known in commercial circles presided at the annual meeting of the bank, although the state of his health was such that his friends advised him not to do so.  The fears of his friends appeared during the time occupied by the meeting to be misplaced for Mr. Brown conducted the proceedings with the usual businesslike despatch, and he was one of the last directors to leave.  But as he walked down the stairs, though he was suddenly

OVERTAKEN WITH AN APOPLECTIC SEIZURE

And fell to the ground.  He was removed to one of the rooms of the Bank by his colleagues and the services of Drs Chevasse and Stacey and his own medical adviser Dr. Ley of Handsworth were obtained.  They however could do very little, and Mr. Brown expired in the presence of all the members of his family who could be present about ten o’clock the same evening.  The deceased was a most active commercial man, especially in railway enterprises.  His busy commercial career commenced many years ago.  He was a Warwickshire man, born at Nuneaton early in the twenties and commenced business as a lad with Messrs Pickford and Co in Birmingham under the late Mr. Robert Houston.  His life to the end was one of plodding and successful industry.  For some years he was manager of the South Staffordshire Railway Co.  He resigned his office in 1861 and then became

MANAGER OF THE CANNOCK CHASE COLLIERY COMPANY

Subsequently he ceased to take such an active part in the management of the latter company and the office devolved upon his son Mr. J Newland Brown though the deceased gentleman retained his seat on the Board to the last.  Mr. Brown was also a director of the firm Edmond Boughton and Co. metal merchants; of the Patent Shaft and Axletree company …………………………. Unable to read next line…………….the Birmingham and District Bank, which office he succeeded to on the death of the late Chairman, Mr. Williams – about 4 years ago.  He was also connected with the South Staffordshire, Water Company, The Gloucester Wagon Company, John Russell & Co (Walsall) Mitchell’s Brewery, and several other large concerns.  He was more particularly interested in the Railway enterprises and was well known in connection with inquiries and claims relating thereto.  For several years the deceased gentleman had suffered from failing health, and had been strongly advised to relinquish some of his many public offices.  Though not what would be called an active politician.  Mr. Brown was a staunch Liberal Unionist and before the great party split in 1886, did much good work in the cause of Liberalism.  During the latter part of his life he was connected as director with Messrs John Russell and Co, Alma Tube Works, Walsall.  No man in Staffordshire had a wider knowledge of all questions affecting the Coal and Iron Trades, and he devoted himself with untiring energy to the promotion of these industries in the county.  In church work he was enthusiastic.  Indeed he was

INDEFATIGABLE IN THE PARISH OF ST. JOHN’S,

Perry Barr, as in commercial enterprises, and for many years he held the office of warden at the church.  He came to reside in Wellington Road, Handsworth.  In 1852 and for a short time identified himself with the Handsworth Parish church, in which parish Anglesey House is situated.  Shortly afterwards, however, he began to attend St. John’s of which the Rev C. B. Snepp had then been vicar for about twelve months, and he attended that church regularly to the time of his death.  For ten consecutive years he was churchwarden and in connection with this office he did such good and useful work.  He was a liberal donor whenever a church enterprise in the parish needed assistance.  To Christ Church he contributed some hundreds of pounds, and he was equally open-handed in giving towards the extension of Perry Barr Parish Church.  Some time ago he presented

A BEAUTIFUTL MEMORIAL WINDOW

In St. Johns in memory of his son, who died in 1888, and of his wife, who died in 1889.  The window is situated in the east end of the new chancel.  Mr. Brown was twice married and his second wife died in 1889.  He leaves a grown up family of four sons and two daughters.  One of his sons is Mr. J. Newland Brown, who as stated, succeeded him in the management of the Cannock Chase Colliery Company; another is Mr. C. F. Brown, solicitor of Waterloo Street; and another if vicar of Longnor, Staffordshire.  At the bank in Colmore Row on Tuesday the blinds were lowered and a flag hoisted half-mast.  The funeral has been fixed to take place at St. Johns Church, Perry Barr on Saturday next at two ‘o’clock.
