Mr Clarke, cornet solo, The Lost Chord, Perry Barr Institute, 26th Feb 1887 – Aston Times

I promised several weeks ago to drop you a line and provide some detail of my

connection with Great Barr. What follows is a brief summary which may be of

interest:

The Clarke side of my family lived in the Handsworth area from the mid 18th

century to about 1900. My great grandfather was born in Aldridge lodge which was bought by his father Fredric Fuhrman Clarke in 1860. His father lived at Brown’s Green Handsworth a house he inherited from his father Nathaniel Gooding Clarke, Chief Justice of Brecon and Camaerthen.

I believe Aldridge Lodge still stands and I shall try and visit soon.

Regards,

Richard

SARAH ELIZABETH

 HANDSWORTH HERALD 1st November 1890

THEFT OF A JACKET.

Elizabeth Wells, Timblemill Lane, Aston, was charged with stealing a cloth jacket of the value of 12shillings, the property of Sarah Elizabeth Clarke, of 156 Witton Road, Perry Barr. The parties were employed at Messrs. Kynock’s and on the 24th ult., prosecutrix hung up the jacket in a corridor. In the evening when she desired to go home it was missing. She and the gatekeeper searched the place but it could not be found, and the police were communicated with. The P.C charged the prisoner with the theft and in reply, the accused said: “I found it fast under my Ulster when I left. I took it and pawned it in the Lichfield Road”. The magistrates in connection of the fact that this was the prisoner’s first offence allowed her the option of a fine of 2s. 6d and costs or in default seven days prisonment.

CLISSOLD

MR

 Weekly Post January 22nd, 18 ?

Mr Clissold of Perry Barr, favours me with the suggestion that the “Gingerbeer Plant” to which allusion has been made is the ginger plant Zingiber officinate of the natural order Zingiberaceae, a native of East India, introduced into the country in 1605, and cultivated as a stove plant. He bases this guess on the fact that no “Gingerbeer Plant” is mentioned in any botanical dictionary. But the description of the plant under discussion does not correspond with the characteristics of the ginger plant; and the name is one which has evidently been given to it in homely familiarity by some non-scientific person who has made “pop” from it, so that the name may very well have escaped being impaled in a dictionary as yet. To make the pop from it “sweetened water in which ginger has been steeped” has to be used, and this would not be necessary if the plant were Zingiber.

MR

 Mail October 11th 1890

This afternoon on the way to the football match at Perry Barr, a large four-horse brake came to grief. The brake, which belongs to Mr Coldicutt, Station Street contained a large number of persons. Near Trinity Church, one of the hind wheels, getting into the groove of the tram rail, was smashed and all of the occupants of the brake were thrown violently to the ground. Several were more or less injured, but two only Arthur Sadler (27) glass worker and George Humphrey (32) metalworker were so badly hurt as to necessitate their removal to hospital. There Sadler’s injuries appeared to be such that he was detained. The other man, after having his wounds treated, left the institution.
