Some of the Lovely comments I have received:

I am just having another look at the site Kathy.. It really is fantastic, John Houghton sends his very best too, he is impressed, in fact he said if he gets to see Carl Chinn today he's going to mention your site to him. I strongly urge you to get a mail or two sent to Carl, your site deserves some
radio publicity!!

I have had no problems with your pages, fellow webmaster....... so thats good..... :-) Rod

Hi Kathy,   I must congratulate you on your excellent website.    Although I am not researching around the Perry Barr area (as yet), I checked out the site anyway and was extremely impressed.  It must have taken you ages to put
that lot together.
I hope you get lots of good feedback about your site, as you certainly deserve it.

Hi Kathy
Just had a look at your website and it's great!! Unfortunately under Church Lane, one of the photos doesn't appear, there's only the red X in the corner. Is it waiting to be inserted or just not appearing?

I have some photos of my ggrandmother which, when I find them, I'll send to you.  When I've got some more info, I'll send it for you to publish on your website.
Many thanks for your reply and interest

Hi Kathy
I am afraid I do not have any information for you, but I have just had a look at your site and I must say I was enthralled, I do not know the Perry Barr area in fact to me Birmingham in general is that big roundabout in the
sky that lies between Manchester where I live and all points south that I want to visit.  I have added your site to my favourites and time I have to spare I shall be back for another walk through I have only touched the surface of A's as yet.  I often go and look at peoples sites just to see if any of my family have wandered but seldom have I found one that makes you
want to not miss anything, I can only think of a couple of others that have brought history to life in such a way that I have come across anyway.
I wish you well and promise to keep my eyes open for anything that may be of interest to you.
Ivy

Hi Kathy,
I apologize for not having any information about Perry Barr to send you and my memories of the area are vague and distant, so I read your message deleted it and passed on to my other emails. Then I saw the
reply from Ivy MURPHY that sparked my attention and suggested I have a look at your site.
For anyone who, like me, passed by your message without a second glance and have not visited your site, they are missing a wonderful example of how to present a library of genealogical and historic information in a friendly manner and that so easy to access. To anyone reading this, when you have a few minutes I recommend a visit Kathy's site. I guarantee you will stay longer than five minutes and it will be well worth your time.
Kathy, I congratulate you on your presentation, the content and your obvious delight and passion in collecting and presenting information. A lesson for us all, thank you for letting me visit your Perry Barr Web site

Hi Kathy,
It's a beautiful site.  thank you for sharing.  Unfortunately, when I click on a name, I can't read the text.  It comes out all letters and numbers and all jibberish.  Probably because I don't have Microsoft Word on my computer.McPherson - USA

Hi Kathy,  Your Perry Barr site is a breath of fresh air.  I have only just really 'got into' emails and i can see the benefits of a web site.  If you have time may I ask a few questions re time and expertise in setting one up please?  Only if you have the time.

Hi Kathy  Although I have no historical interest in these Birmingham areas I checked out the  web sites and must congratulate you and everyone else involved.  They contain a wealth of information, photographs, personal stories. Their value is shown by the messages in the Guestbooks.

What a great example to others with the knowledge and photographs of  older times in our cities, towns and villages to get organised and put their information on the web ! - Dennis

Hi Kathy,
I just wanted to say "thank you" and "well done" on your website.  I found it extremely interesting and haven't explored all pages yet.
My ASSINDER family lived at 21 Wilson Road, Birchfield in 1885 according to a death announcement of an infant son.  Later moving to Linwood Road & then Chain Walk.  I'm not even certain if these streets were in Perry Barr, but enjoyed looking at the photographs and reading the articles.
Keep up the good work.
Best wishes

Hi there !
I have just come across your web site, and found it very absorbing, congratulations.
I have watched with interest the growth of the Aston counterpart.  I do think it important that this info is got down.
I'd like to know how you propose to develop the site.
Although born in Manchester, I was born of Aston & Perry Barr parents just a few months before WW2 started. My Dad returned to his mother's in Walsall Road, just a little way above the crem and joined the Home Guard, mother and I returned to Elmbridge Road in 1942 and we lived there till 1951, I attended The Council School in Perry Barr for a few weeks and then attended Aston Park School in Haughton Road, just off Birchfields Rd and our school sporting
activities were held in the Vicarage gardens of Holy Trinity. I then attended Handsworth Grammar School till 1958. My father's family lived in Aston and my mother's family in Wellington Road near the site of the (new) Crown & Cushion. They were married in the Wesleyian Chapel in Aston Lane. What was the history of the cobbled path on the north side of Church Lane, as a child I was told Cromwell built it!! There was a nursing home there too, just opposite St Johns, I went there to Sunday School for a time! I remember the AA guns at the corner of Church lane and Walsall road and the rockets and search lights in Perry Hall Park, and the shrapnell damage to the row of cottages opposite Perry Barr Park.  Sorry I ramble!!

Like to hear from you,
Regards,

Geoff

It looks excellent , really easy to follow. I like the way it is presented. All your hard work has paid off. I am pleased for you. Sarah
Dear Kathy,
My best friend, Gary Davis, who now lives in Victoria, British Columbia, informed me about your website on Perry Barr and your kindness in looking up his Grandfather, John George Davis.  He was very pleased with your site and the information you also provided.
Congratulations on a very informative website, especially with the
photographs.

Hi
just a note to say that I enjoyed browsing your Perr Barr site.  I don't know Perry Barr really, but I remember that my great aunt lived there and we visited her once - probably mid-1950s. I was very pleased to find the name TAMAN among those listed - this was  my great aunt's maiden name.  The TAMANs have eluded me in both the 1881 and 1901 censuses - must have had a thing about the census man! To have located, within your pages, the burial record of Joseph TAMAN has provided me a new lead to follow....

Thanks again.

I was delighted to find your super sight, it was a great help. Audrey
Congratulations - what a wonderful site you have. I grew up in Billesley and my parents were born in Hockley. I was a Hartshorne and I note that there is a Hartshorn (although without the 'e') shown in the 'H' surnames. Could you please send me details as I was unable to do get these for myself. I'm pretty useless on the computer. I shall definitely visit your site again. It's one of the best I've seen.
Thank you again,
Brenda

Tremendous site, congratulations!!
I haven't any direct links with Perry Barr, but I do have in my possession the Address Books of my Great Aunt, Margaret Emily NASH. Who was born in Kidderminster in 1893,  family moved to Selly Oak in 1896. She lived most of her adult life in Hasbury/Halesowen until she emigrated at age 69 to New Zealand. ( To join her Widower Brother ) In her address books, which cover c 1920 - 75 are listed names and addresses of several family and friends who lived in Perry Barr. I have only briefly scanned  through at present. But if you would be interested in adding these names to your database, I would happy to send them.

Hello to all at Perry Barr and beyond, I have a picture of Aston Hall Lodge from a sketch done by my father in 1933,which you may be interested in, I've attached it to this e-mail. Thanks for the image of the Scott Arms which appears on google, and led me to your website. That picture is one of the best I've seen of that particular
location. I was also interested to note that you have some Chatterley names on the site, who are related to me, probably great aunts/uncles. The family was well known in the jewellery quarter where they had a business. I also note that you have some of my wife's relatives on there, the Binsley family. Her grandfather was coachman to the Scott family, from which the Scott Arms gets its name. The Scott estate is of course now under development for housing, and used to be the St. Margaret's Hospital, which took its name
from Lady Margaret Scott.
I believe that their coat of arms was on the Scott Arms pub., and is also on a lodge at the start of  Handsworth drive, just down the Queslett Road, by Whitecrest. If  I'm down that way with a camera, I'll try an get a decent
shot of the lodge and its crest for your site.
Best Regards, John.

Hi
Have just visited your site, and found it very interesting, my Grandparents & father lived in Perry Barr, surname Brown, I don't know if there is any mention as it would not go forward to the next page in "B". What I am really interested in is finding a copy of the Parish magazine  for Perry Old Church for June 1926. My Grandfather Joseph Brown was mentioned in it, I found his burial and a note at the side to say there was a mention of him, but have been unable to locate a copy, Bham Ref library hadn't got that year, and I wrote to Perry Church, but they couldn't help me either, just a copy of the entry will do,
Will certainly going back to the site

Hi
I have just chanced upon www.perrybarrbeyond.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk and found it fascinating.  My father's family lived in Aston Lane from the mid 19th century until 1970s.
Many thanks

I am researching family history and notice my family name on your website. From information I was told as a child I believe my father’s family came from Perry Barr and my grandfather was an alderman. I have very little further information and would be grateful if you have anything further.

Thank you for your reply to my mail. By all means include my e-mail address on your site for contact re the Ellis and Devonshire families. I also have a
website at www.angelfire.com/ga/BobSanders which is a family history site and includes some local history relating to
Cardiff & Glamorgan, Whitby & North Yorkshire and maritime history.

I did subsequently find the picture but it is headed James Medlicott Ellis and I am not entirely sure who he was, though I suspect he might have been a
son of William M Ellis the elder. Can you confirm that the picture is of James not William ?

My wife's ancestor David Ormond Devonshire was an engraver who lived at Icknield Street, Birmingham. He was a first cousin to Charles Ellis the
father of William Medlicott Ellis. Two of David's sons John David born Birmingham c.1794 but I have not found his baptism) & William Devonshire
(born London 1806) were both brought up in Birmingham but returned to London where they were in the jewellery making business and then migrated to
Scarborough & Whitby where they both set up in the Jet Jewellery Trade. My wife's parents were both born in Whitby but came to South Wales to live
during the War and my wife was born in Barry. As you can tell tracing the family has taken me from Barry to Whitby then to London, then to Birmingham,
then back to London !

Another son of David O Devonshire was a Henry Devonshire (born London 1801). He too was an engraver but he stayed in Birmingham & married at Yardley in
1829. His son another Henry was a commercial traveller & lived at Brougham Street, Aston. Yet another of David's children was Mary Devonshire of
Walsall who died at Aston in 1875.

I also have a relative named Alison Wood who was born in Perry Barr. Her parents David Wood & Valerie Taylor were married at St.Johns, Perry Barr in
1956. Her mother Valerie Taylor was born in Perry Barr in 1937 & her grandparents Arthur Taylor & Irene (Greatorex) both died there. However
Irene Greatorex was from Barry. Her mother was my grandmother's first cousin.

If I come across any connections to people from Perry Barr I will check your
site and let you know.

Regards

Bob Sanders
Just logged onto your great site for the above.  I have been tracing the Judd family who lived there from 1861 onwards.  John Judd husband of Maria Bradbury was 28 then.

The 1851 census for Handsworth shows the same John aged 13 born Perry Barr living with father William Judd.  I cannot make out the name of the place they are living.  It is just before Perry Barr in this census and looks like Cicott, Bicott or something similar.  Any ideas??

I promised several weeks ago to drop you a line and provide some  detail of my connection with Great Barr.  What follows is a brief summary which may be of interest: The Clarke side of my family lived in the Handsworth area from the mid 18th century to about 1900.  My great grandfather was born in Aldridge lodge which was bought by his father Fredric Fuhrman Clarke in 1860. His father lived at Brown’s Green Handsworth a house he inherited from his father Nathaniel Gooding Clarke, Chief Justice of Brecon and Camaerthen.
I believe Aldridge Lodge still stands and I shall try and visit soon.

Regards,
Richard

Congratulations on a fascinating site.  Hope you get as much feedback as you deserve.

I was interested to see the pre-1965 picture of Birchfield Road School.  It's at:

I'm wondering ..I should very much like to use that picture on my site www.staffshomeguard.co.uk (totally amateur and non-commercial) to illustrate the page devoted to a sometime headmaster of the school, Thomas Chapman.  The page in question can be seen    thttp://www.staffshomeguard.co.uk/D7ReminiscencesDstaffshg.htm.  Would you have any objection?

I should of course be happy to make full acknowledgement and, if you wished it, insert a link to your site.

Thanks for considering this.

Hi,  spent a very enjoyable couple of hours on your Perry Barr website yesterday.  My query is:    Would you know if Perry Villa which was in Church Rd (think the old  name was Church Lane) still exists ?   I lived there in 1953/54 approx when it was  a childrens home.  My mother was the Camp Commandant ( Matron).   I enjoyed  my time there - the description on your website of the sale of Perry Villa fits my  memory of how it was.  I terrorised the gardener, there were massive rhododendron bushes along the  driveway in which I built little hideaways and also I think the glass in the glasshouse
had a few less panes by the time I left !  My wife and I will be in the area on one of our canal boat holidays next May and if
the building still exists would love to stop at Perry Barr locks for a visit.  Any information or a photo you can give me would be most appreciated.

Hello,
I want to tell you I enjoyed your website.  My ancestors are from Perry Barr.  They were married in the Holy Trinity Church on Trinity Road.  I am looking for information on the church.  My father and I are planning a trip to England next year and would love to have information on the surrounding area and some good site seeing places.  Are you from Perry Barr?  We are very excited about our trip and would like any help we could get.  We would also like to know the best place to go to look up marriage records and death records.  Thank you for any help you can give me.

Greetings,

Well-known Birmingham author ALTON DOUGLAS now has his own web site, and  I am currently compiling his new revised links page

I have taken the liberty of putting a link to your site on this page, as I feel it fits in well with the content of his site and his books on Birmingham.

If at some time you could place a link to our site on your pages, then of course that would be appreciated.

Best wishes,

Ken Windsor.  (Webmaster, for Alton Douglas)
I came across your site whilst searching for "the manor of Pyrie, Hampstede" Whilst I have no known connection with Perry (other than assuming that
Pyrie and Perry are the same places) and though I did not find the answer to my question, I had to contact you and say how extremely impressed I am
with your site. It is interesting, informative and above all easy to use. Though, as I mentioned, I have no connection, I spent quite some time
reading and looking at pictures.
Give your self a really big pat on the back.

All the best,
John

i have just been on your site and found it totally fascinating......
I live on Tame Road in Witton, I am very interested in the history of the road and the houses.......If you have any information or know of a web site i can visit i would be most appreciative.
Many thanks for a superb web site.

Congratulations on your brilliant site.

I am trying to find information and any photographs of the grocers shop my relatives kept for 40 years in Franchise Street.  It was adjacent to the Wellhead Tavern and next to a newspaper shop called Kemps I believe.  My relatives names were Russon and Meaking.  Do you have any information on these people or the shop?

Many thanks

Good evening

I was hoping that you may be able to assist me in tracking down some information or indeed a photo of a property in Trinity Road.

My mother - in -law used to live with her mother at a property in Trinity Road on the site that now houses the Sacred Heart Primary school. The house that they lived in for many years was used as a guest house and was situated next to a dr's surgery. I know from her stories that she was there during the war!!  The property was later the subject of a compulsory purchase order and the school was then built.  I myself attended the school in 1972 - 1978 - years before I married her son, strange old world isn't it!!!

Anyway not sure if you will be able to help but thank you in advance for your time even if you can't.

By the way if you are wanting to hear how life used to be in and around Aston, Birchfield Road then my mom - in - law has some facinating stories that I think would be worth preserving!!

Thanks for the fab website and I loved the bit about the Brummies Speedway - those were the days!!

Kind regards

Chris
Hi, what a Great site, I live in sutton coldfield & spent many happy hours in the perry hall park as a kid, I found photos of the old ford mill on your site, can you tell me any more info ie;

Hi there,

Your new format of website is brilliant, I just love that little mouse, anyway down to my question that I need to ask you. At the moment I am doing a big piece for the Birmingham History webring on the mills of Birmingham and Warwickshire (past and present). I know that Perry Barr Mill was not in the Warwickshire area but have decided to incorporate it in my research, along with the Handsworth and Yardley Mills. Do you mind if I download the pictures of the Perry Barr Mills, I may not use them but just in case I need to I wanted to ask first. Don’t worry if the answer is no I shall not be offended, I do understand about the copyrights!! Keep up the good work, brilliant.

Kind regards,

Anne
