FODEN

GILES

I am a descendant of the Foden family who farmed in Perry Barr, latterly at Booth's Farm. My great-great-grandfather is Arthur Foden, father of William Francis Foden. Arthur fought in the Boer War and then returned to farming.
I think he may be the Arthur Foden mentioned in your records as buying land around 1916. I was wondering if you might be able to help me in flushing out the family tree a little, in part because I hear Oxford University is doing a genetic study on the family, also because I have a connection to
the Cheshire Foden’s (who make the lorries) and it would be interesting to pin down the link. My final reason is that as an author I am interested in writing a novelised history of the family. Can I say how much I admire the work you have done on Perry Barr? I am also interested in writing about William Booth, whose forgery plates were in the family for some time, and are now in a museum I believe.

SHOCKING ACCIDENT AT PERRY BARR

At about 3 o clock on Saturday afternoon a labourer named Amos Thornhill met with a serious accident at Perry Barr.  The man was employed at the farm of Mr. Foden, Perry Barr, and whilst some other men, endeavoring to get a chaff-cutting machine into working order, the machine started and Thornhill’s hands and wrists, which were between the knives were cut in a shocking matter.  He was taken to the General Hospital where, shortly after his arrival, it was found necessary to amputate both his hands.  The unfortunate man has a wife and six children.  Upon enquiry at the hospital last night, it was stated that he was progressing as favourably as could be expected.

FOOTBALL

Post     November 7th 1884.

Narrow escape of a Wagonnette Party.

On Saturday evening a number of persons, who had been to a football match at Perry Barr had a narrow escape from being seriously injured.  They were riding in a wagonette which was full, but unevenly balanced, and whilst proceeding down the Birchfield Road, opposite the Bulls Head, the vehicle over-turned, and the whole of the occupants were thrown into the road.  For a time considerable excitement prevailed owing to the shouts for help; but after a time, order was restored, and then it was found that beyond several bruises and scratches the passengers were uninjured, but the wagonette was a complete wreck.

Mail                                                                                      October 11th 1890

This afternoon on the way to the football match at Perry Barr, a large four-horse brake came to grief.  The brake, which belongs to Mr Coldicutt, Station Street contained a large number of persons.  Near Trinity Church, one of the hind wheels, getting into the groove of the tram rail, was smashed and all of the occupants of the brake were thrown violently to the ground.  Several were more or less injured, but two only Arthur Sadler (27) glass worker and George Humphrey (32) metalworker were so badly hurt as to necessitate their removal to hospital.  There Sadler’s injuries appeared to be such that he was detained.  The other man, after having his wounds treated, left the institution.

EXCITED OVER FOOTBALL MATCH

Samuel Godwin of Handsworth was charged with being drunk in charge of a horse and cart on the 30th September.  Police Constable Curran deposed to meeting defendant in charge of a horse and cart being so drunk and incapable he was locked up.  Inspector Bishop deposed to seeing the defendant bought to the station.  He was then drunk – Defendant urged that he was not drunk but excited over a football match.  Fined 2s 6d and costs.

ALARMING BRAKE ACCIDENT IN LANCASTER STREET

This afternoon about half past 2.o.clock an accident occurred to a heavily laden brake carrying passengers to the football at Perry Barr.  The vehicle – which belongs to a man named Brown – was drawn by three horses.  It was licensed to carry 18 passengers, but according to the statements of the police, it was at the time of the accident carrying four or five more of that number.  Turning out of Corporation Street into Lancaster Street, the wheels collapsed and the vehicle fell over on its right side.  The driver and four other passers who were sitting on the front were thrown to the ground, but were not badly injured.  The inside passengers, however, fared worse.  The brake was a covered one and when it overturned those inside were not thrown out, but were hurled into a confused struggling mass.  It was sometime before they could be extricated.  Police Constable 38D, who was on duty on the spot, sized one of the horses, and the bystanders pulled the passengers out, one by one.  Three of those who were at the bottom during the struggle were found to have suffered considerable injury, whilst the others were more or less shaken.  The injured persons were taken to the General Hospital, in cabs, where two of them, Edwin Chalk, of 2 Brighton Terrace, Cromwell Street, and C. Walters of 118, Albert Road, Handsworth, having been treated for scalp wounds were discharged.  The third man, however, was found seriously injured; his name is George Schall, 87, Greenway Street, Small Heath.  The nature of his injuries is not yet ascertained, but he is believed to be seriously injured.

Also in the Handsworth Herald – February 1st, 1887

The brake belonged to Mr. T. Carty of Steelhouse Lane

* Schall was found to have a dislocated shoulder.

SUSPICIOUS DEATH IN BIRMINGHAM

This afternoon Mr Hawkes (Coroner) held an adjourned inquest at his court, Moor Street on the body of William Newton (57) who lodged at 2, Franchise Street, Perry Barr.  The inquest was adjourned from the 7th inst., Caroline Humley recalled, stated that deceased lodged with her.  He was in the habit of spending his evenings at the Freeholders Arms in Franchise Street.  On Saturday night, the 23rd ult., he came home drunk.  Shortly afterwards he went out again.  The next morning witness noticed that the deceased looked unwell, and she enquired what was the matter with him.  He replied that a strange man had accused him of drinking his beer and had struck him whilst he was at “Roger’s” house.  Witness did not notice any mark on the deceased face until Wednesday, when she noticed a swelling on his left jaw.  She then advised him to go to the General Hospital on Thursday morning.  He was asking the witness what time the institution opened, when he fell down, and his head came into contact with an iron fender.  He was afterwards taken to the General Hospital, where he died.  Mrs Bourne, Franchise Street, stated she saw the deceased fall on the evening of the 23rd ult., and strike his head on the kerbstone.

Alfred Rogers, the landlord of the Freeholders Arms, said he remembered no row at his house on the 23rd.  The Coroner: Were there any roughs there?  Witness: They might be rough or smooth.  The Coroner: I suppose you don’t car as long as they drink plenty?  Witness: That’s it.  The Coroner to the Jury:  You will know value to put upon evidence given in this way.

The jury returned a verdict of “Accidental Death”
