Hands 29th November 1890 Shop Robbery. Charles Byfield (16) and Arthur Ellis (14) both of Perry Barr were charged with stealing pencil cases, value 4s, from the shop of George Burns, newsagent 369 Birchfield Road. Frances Slaney, daughter of the prosecutor said that she saw the good safe on the 5th inst. On the following day she missed them. She identified the goods as her property. Witness did not wish to proceed the case. When charged by police constable Pottam, they both made a full confession. In the dock they pleaded guilty In passing sentence, Mr Fallows said that they were evidently bad boys, and it was not the first time they had been convicted, but although they deserved to be sent to goal, he would give them the benefit of a fine of £1 and costs or in default one months hard labour.

HANDSWORTH HERALD June 28th 1890 WEST BROMWICH COUNTY POLICE COURT
Alleged theft
of Eggs. Harriet Smith (17) of Perry
Barr was charged with stealing three hen eggs valued at 3d, the property
of John Foden, Landlord of the Royal Oak Inn, Perry Barr on the 10th
inst. Elizabeth Foden, wife of the
prosecutor, said the accused lived with her parents, next door to the public
house. They had missed a large number
of eggs. On the date in question
witness put a nest egg in the pen and two hens were on the next. In a quarter of an hour after her first
visit, she again went to the pen but found no eggs there. Mr Shakespeare (Magistrates clerk) You
didnt know the eggs were laid. Witness: but the next egg was taken. She saw the prisoner in the yard and asked
her what she had done with the eggs, when she replied I took them into the
house and intended to bring them to you presently. Witness went into the house shortly afterwards and prisoner
gave her the three eggs. PC Millar stationed at Perry Barr Village
said that on the 13th inst, he served a summons on the prisoner
for stealing eggs on the 13th inst, when she said I did take them
into the house, but intended to give them to Mrs Foden. She further added that she was going to
fetch some firewood when she discovered the eggs near some sticks, and took
them into the house for safety. Mr
Pearson said that the prisoner appeared to bear a good character and they had
decided to accept her explanation.
She would therefore be discharged. |
