FOUND IN THE CANAL AT PERRY BARR

About 3.30 on Wednesday afternoon the attention of James William Cope, lock keeper, was called by a boatman to a hat, coat and vest on the towing path of the Birmingham and Tame Valley Canal, near the Aldridge Road Bridge, Perry Barr.  He informed Police Constable Clark, and on searching the canal they discovered the body of a man in the middle of the canal opposite the spot where the clothing was found   They got the body out of the water and removed it to the mortuary at the rear of the Boar’s Head Public house.  In the evening the body was identified by the man’s wife as that of James Sorrell, a tube drawer, aged 40, residing at 2, Reynold’s

Street, Smethwick.

The inquest was held on Thursday afternoon at the Boars Head, Perry Barr, by Mr G. C. Lewis, Coroner for South Staffordshire.  Emma Hicks, Norfolk Street, Dudley Road, Birmingham, mother of the deceased man’s wife, said her sister had informed her that deceased went out the previous day about 10.30 in the morning.

……(sorry unable to read the first few lines)

…… assaulting a little girl named Polly Spencer residing with her grandfather at the Boar’s Head Inn, Perry Barr.  The child upon being sworn, said she knew the prisoner.  On the 18th ult., she was in the garden at the back of the Boars’ Head, washing the bricks of the greenhouse when the prisoner behaved in an improper manner towards her.  Police Sergeant Gilbride said he arrested the prisoner, and upon being charged with the offence, he denied it.  Prisoner now pleaded not guilty, and was committed to sessions at Stafford to take his trial.  William Frowin (40) was charged with a similar offence upon a little girl named Lillian Pettitt.  There being insufficient evidence against prisoner, the bench discharged him.  Mr. J S Sharpe defended.
