TAMAN |
JOSEPH |
I
believe that the Joseph TAMAN mentioned in your pages is Ada's father - the
age ties in with details given on a marriage certificate of Joseph TAMAN to Ellen
BARLOW 20 January 1873 in Aston. Ada's (1880) birth certificate shows
parents Joseph TAMAN and Ellen (formerly BARLOW). I can't quite make
out the occupation of Joseph - it looks like "hardener" which I
imagine was related to metal working - possibly in the gun industry.

Handsworth Herald, 24th July 1897 An inquest was held on Wednesday evening at Thornhill Road, Police Station touching the death of Eliza Louisa Taylor (57) of Aston. The deceased died suddenly at Perry Barr on Sunday, whilst on her way to the railway station. She was taken suddenly ill and some brandy was procured for her. The jury returned a verdict hat death was due to natural causes. |

dated Nov 1st 1890 and the other dated 12th November
1890
Strange conduct of a Perry Barr
Groom. At the Birmingham Police Court
on Wednesday, Thomas Tedstone (21) groom, Crown Avenue Perry Barr, was
charged with being in possession of a loaded revolver while drunk. The accused was employed in Newtown Row
and on Tuesday after he called at the place and began talking about “doing
for himself”. He brandished a loaded
revolver but when tackled by another workman he put the weapon into his
pocket and refused to produce it.
Someone dispossessed him of it and he then walked homewards. Police Constable Hemming went after
him. A slight struggle ensued and the
handcuffs were put on and the prisoner was conveyed to Duke Street. It was stated that the prison was very
drunk at the time.
(He was employed as a Groom to Mr. Shillock –
Boot and shoe manufacturer – Newtown Row. William Moon, William Charleton were other

THANKSGIVING |
|
HANDSWORTH HERALD June 26TH 1897 Exceedingly well-attended Thanksgiving Services were held in Perry Barr Parish Church on Sunday. Special music was rendered and the National Anthem was sung at each service. The preacher was the Rev A M Auden (Curate) who basing his sermon on the words “Free Ye Have Received, Freely Give” alluded to the many blessings we enjoy today through the unselfish efforts of our ancestors. We got further back than 1837, when Queen Victoria ascended the Thorne, great changes had been brought about for the benefit of the people, being thus better off than our forefathers, it should be our pride, as it was our privilege, to ungrudgingly labour for the good, not only in our own generation but of generations yet unborn.. |

THOMLINSON |
CHARLES |
HANDSWORTH HERALD 28th May 1892 POVERTY AND SELF DESTRUCTION On Friday last a sad tale of the hardship of poverty and destruction was related by a woman named Thomlinson, to the local magistrates. Her husband Charles Thomlinson of Perry Barr had been out of work for weeks, and at last, unable to bear the pang any longer, attempted to take his own life. On the morning of 29th April last, he spoke to her in such a heart broken manner, and she prayed of him to be hopeful, declaring that God would help then, but on reminding his wife that there was only a little
Dry Bread
And a cup of tea for her and the child when they arose, he broke out, afresh, and then said he wished that was the last time he was going to get up. Again the wife remonstrated with him. But he retorted with “I don’t know how much longer I shall be able to see you and the child”. The commenced to dress with the intention of going out in search of employment. All this time he had a razor concealed beneath the pillow on his bed and on seeing him take it, his wife questioned him concerning it. He said it was only his knife, which on the previous night was in his overcoat pocket, thrown over the bed – and fearful lest it would fall out and disturb them he placed it under his pillow. No notice was taken of this although
His wife was somewhat disturbed.
Shortly after this, his wife arose and on going downstairs heard a noise as though someone had fallen. Fearing some ill she rushed out of the door and shrieked “Murder”. In the meantime, a man named Thomas Goldsmith went upstairs a found the poor fellow lying in a pool of blood. He raised him from the ground, but the injured man begged to be allowed to die and go with his misery. Of course no notice was taken of his request and cold water bandages were quietly applied to his then fast-bleeding throat.
A blood stained razor
Lay by his side. He was taken to the hospital and so serious was his wound, he was detained until Friday last, when he was arranged before the Magistrates. In reply, Mr Pearson, prisoner express his regret for having acted so rushly and promised not to repeat the attempt to take his own life. Mr Pearson was evidently touched by the story so pathetically related by the wife, and in a few very kind words pointed out to the accused the mistake he had made and urged him to have courage for the sake of his wife and child. He was discharged in the hope that he would know better in future. The poor man is spoken of as a hardworking, steady man, when he can find employment, but having been out of work for 10 weeks he became very much depressed and committed the rash act above named. Much sympathy is felt for him in the neighbourhood where he is very well known and highly respected. |

HANDSWORTH HERALD No date SHOCKING ACCIDENT AT PERRY BARR At about 3 o clock on Saturday afternoon a labourer named Amos Thornhill met with a serious accident at Perry Barr. The man was employed at the farm of Mr. Foden, Perry Barr, and whilst some other men, endeavouring to get a chaff-cutting machine into working order, the machine started and Thornhill’s hands and wrists, which were between the knives were cut in a shocking matter. He was taken to the General Hospital where, shortly after his arrival, it was found necessary to amputate both his hands. The unfortunate man has a wife and six children. Upon enquiry at the hospital last night, it was stated that he was progressing as favourably as could be expected.
