THE PERRY BARR CANAL
MYSTERY
Mr H A Pearson for South Staffordshire
held an inquiry at the Beaufort Arms, Hamstead this morning, relative to the
death of an unknown man who was found drowned in the water of the Tame Valley
Canal at Tower Hill, Perry Barr early on Saturday morning. Dr Frank Huse gave it his opinion that the
body had been in the water about a week.
He stated that he had to make a post mortem in a shed at the
colliery. It was the second he had to
make under similar circumstances and he thought it would be much better if a
public mortuary were provided Perry Barr. The Coroner promised to call the attention of the Perry Barr
District Council to the matter. An
open verdict of “Found drowned” was returned |

HANDSWORTH
HERALD 20th
July 1889
On Saturday
morning about 9.00. George Hood, 35,
Barn Street, Birmingham, found a man in the canal at Tower Hill, Perry
Barr. The man was floating in the
water and on it’s being recovered it was found to be a man apparently about
50 years of age. The body was quite
warm when discovered, although life was extinct. P.C Smith of Hamstead was communicated with and the deceased
was carried to the Beaufort Arms, Great Barr, to await an inquest. Smith recognised the deceased as a man he
had met at 5.30 the same morning in Spouthouse Lane. The constable thought it was rather
strange to see the man walking about so early in the morning and said to him,
when passing “Old Chap, you are out early for your walk” to which the
deceased replied “Yes I am”. There
was nothing in the man’s possession to identify him and although the police
have made most searching enquiries they have failed to trace who the man
is. The deceased, however, appears to
have been a respectable man and well-cared for. A servant at the Beaufort Arms recognised the man as one she
served with something to drink on the Saturday morning about 7.o clock, so it
is quite clear that the body had not been long in the water when it was found
by Hood.
The description
of the man given by the Police are as follows:- about 50 years of age. 5ft 2” stoutish build, full beard, no
moustache, rather bald on head, dressed in dark worsted reefer jacket, ribbed
vest, dark grey tweed trousers, low shoes, white cotton socks, oxford checked
shirt and a new white under-flannel vest.
An inquest on
the body on Tuesday at the Beaufort Arms, Great Barr, before the Coroner Mr.
E. Hooper. No further information,
however, was forthcoming and the jury returned an open verdict.
