ARTHUR

Mail                      15th October 1902

This morning a horse and trap belonging to Arthur Annis, Butcher, Birchfield Road was standing outside the shop door when a strong gust of wind gathered underneath the cover and raised it.  The cover alighted on the horse’s back, causing the animal to bolt at a rapid pace along the Walsall Road.  A man named James Kelly, tramping to Walsall, in response to shouts, attempted to stop the horse and, in doing so was knocked down and badly injured.  The new ambulance which has been placed at Perry Barr was bought into requisition for the 1st time, and the injured man conveyed along the road until the horse ambulance which had been summoned was met.  Kelly was then transferred to it and conveyed to the General Hospital.  After being attended he was removed in the Handsworth horse ambulance to the workhouse.
