I have the following newspaper report from Birmingham 1958 which you
may be interested in.  The people mentioned are my Great Grandfather
and his father.

FATHER DROVE THE FIRST AND THE SON DROVE THE LAST
-------------------------------------------------
 by Alertus

Driver of the electric tram which was the last to run on the Birmingham
 - Perry Bar route buses will replace the trams today was the son of  the
first man who drove along the route exactly 43 years ago.

The man who drove the first electric tram was Mr. C. Bennett,  originally a steam-tram driver who is now 79 years of age and, having  got married again six months ago is now living in Southhampton.

Driver of the last tram last night was Mr W. M. ("Billy") Bennett of Mansfield-road, Birchfields.

He entered the service of the Birmingham Corporation Transport  Department in 1913 as a conductor and became a driver a year later.
All his service - 37 years - has been spent on the Perry Bar route.

"I really think I know it by now".

 All Change
----------

Mr C. Bennett, driver of the first electric tram on the route, did  not, of course, go as far as Perry Barr.  At that time - 1 January  1907 - Aston Manor and handsworth were not part of Birmingham and  passengers had to change at the Barton Arms and board a tram run by a private company which took them to Chain Walk, Birchfielfds.  At that point passengers changed again for Perry Barr into a Birmingham  Corporation tram running on a track leased from the Handsworth Urban  District Council. For two years - until 1909 - there was a lot of excercise in climbing in and out of vehicles for Perry Barr people. Then arrangements were  made - in anticipation of the extension of Birminghams boundaries -  for the straight-through service.

Sorrowful
 ---------

Young Mr Bennett - Mr Billy Bennett - is not to lose his occupation  by the disuse of the tram track to Perry Barr.  He will be driving an  electric tram on the Erdington route.  "After 37 years it's probably  time I had a change."

Perry Barr Mystery

About 3 O’clock, Saturday afternoon two boys employed by Kynock’s Ltd., named Alfred Lane of 25 Witton Road and Harry Bennett, 1, back 258 Witton Road, discovered the body of a newly born male child lying on a piece of unenclosed land between Kenilworth Road and Tintern Road at Perry Barr.  The boys called the attention of a young man Joseph Tuckley 226, Witton Road and he went and informed the police, and Police Constable Williams came and recovered the body to the police station in Canterbury Road.  The body which was partly enclosed in pieces of newspaper and brown paper was in a very advance stage of decomposition.  An inquest was held upon the body before Mr G C Lewis Coroner for South Staffordshire at the police station, Perry Barr, on Tuesday.  Dr Charles Robertson, Soho Hill, Handsworth, said that the body was that of a fully developed male.
