Golden harps are
sounding. "When visiting at
Perry Barr, F. R. H. walked to the boys' schoolroom, and being very tired she
leaned against the play-ground wall, while Mr. Snepp [editor of S. of Grace
& Glory, 1872] went in. Returning in ten minutes he found her scribbling
on an old envelope. At his request she gave him the hymn just pencilled,
'Golden harps,' &c. Her popular tune Hermas was composed for this
hymn. Hermas was the tune she sang, as 'the pearly gates opened' for
her, June 3, 1879." [HAV. MSS.] |

Mail– May 3rd 1899 Playing with Fire at Perry Barr Hilda Hazeldine, the four month old child of parents residing at 15 North Road, Perry Barr has died in the General Hospital from burns received on Monday. Some elder children and the baby had been left in the house during the absence of the mother, and one of them played with a lighted paper and set fire to the cot in which the baby was lying. The fire quickly spread to the mantelpiece and had it not been for the timely arrival of the neighbours, the house would have burnt down. |

HANDSWORTH HERALD June
1894 DEATH OF FATHER AND DAUGHTER
We have to record with regret the
death of John Hickman of Leahurst, Birchfield Road, under somewhat peculiar
circumstances on Tuesday last. About
on Monday, Mr Hickman, accompanied by his wife and daughter, went to Rhyl. After a fortnight, there, the young lady
was taken ill and died, after a few days illness only on Saturday last. Mr Hickman returned home on Tuesday, to
make arrangements for his daughter’s funeral and was then, to all appearances
in his usual health, towards nine o clock in the evening, seized by pain at
his heart. He retired to bed and Dr.
Norris was immediately summoned, but death convened before the medical
gentleman’s arrival. Mr Hickman was
the founder of the firm, …(cant read it) …………….. and Clive, Brassfounders of
Birmingham, retired from business many years ago. The father and daughter were interred at Perry
Barr Church on Thursday afternoon.
Handsworth Herald – June 9th 1894 THE DEATH OF MR. AND MISS HICKMAN The remains of Mr. John Hickman, of Leahurst, Birchfield, and his daughter Miss Jennie were interred together at Perry Barr Church on Thursday the 31st ult. Mr and Mrs Hickman and their daughter were staying at Rhyl when Miss Hickman was suddenly taken ill and died after only a few days illness. Mr and Mrs Hickman to whom it can hardly be said, the blow was a very sad one and returned to Birmingham to make arrangements for the funeral. Upon their arrival at Birchfield however, Mr. Hickman suffered from Heath disease, his death being accelerated if not entirely due to the shock caused to his loss of his daughter. The affair caused the greatest sorrow in Rhyl, where having been visitors for many years, they were known to a large number of people as in Birmingham. The esteem in which Mr. Hickman was held in this neighbourhood was general. He was a prominent Congregationalist it was largely due to his munificence to churches in Lozells Road and Westminster Road were erected. In many ways proved most benevolent and philanthropic scenes at the graveside was very pathetic, the concourse of people gathered there being affected. There were present many of the people whom it had been Miss Hickman’s …….. and who will sorely miss her and warm womanly sympathy and generous assistance. Her friends and family who were present were the Rev. Frederick Stephens, Messrs Gutridge (Rhyl) Rogers, Stone and Cephas Butler. Sympathy is felt with Mrs Hickman who is invalid.
