SADLER |
ARTHUR |
Mail October 11th 1890 This afternoon on the way to the football match at Perry Barr, a large four-horse brake came to grief. The brake, which belongs to Mr Coldicutt, Station Street contained a large number of persons. Near Trinity Church, one of the hind wheels, getting into the groove of the tram rail, was smashed and all of the occupants of the brake were thrown violently to the ground. Several were more or less injured, but two only Arthur Sadler (27) glass worker and George Humphrey (32) metalworker were so badly hurt as to necessitate their removal to hospital. There Sadler’s injuries appeared to be such that he was detained. The other man, after having his wounds treated, left the institution. |

SAFE
HABOUR |
|
-----Original Message-----
My grandma Kate Whitmore lived in Rose Cottages situated behind the monumental mason's yard in Moor Lane, opposite the main gates of Witton Cemetery. The cottages were two rows with back gardens facing down the middle, and the far row fronting onto the canal. There is now an industrial estate where they were situated. 'The Safe Harbour' pub', still a short walk away, was Grandma's local. I have asked everyone I can think of if they have a photo' of the cottages but to no avail. It would be great if one was donated to your site.

SANATORIUM |
|
THE MAIL 8TH APRIL 1907 THE POOR CONSUMPTIVE SIR, NOW THAT WE ARE ON THE EVE OF AN IMPORTANT MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL, AT WHICH A SOMEWHAT COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME FOR THE FOUNDING OF A SANATORIUM FOR POOR CONSUMPTIVES WILL BE SUBMITTED, MAY I VENTURE TO URGE THAT EVERY MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL WILL MAKE AN EFFORT TO BE PRESENT AND TO RECORD HIS VOTE IN FAVOUR OF THE HEALTH COMMITTEE’S REPORT? THAT THERE ARE TWO SCHEMES WHICH WILL NECESSITATE THE SPENDING OF LARGE SUMS OF THE RATE-PAYERS MONEY TO BE DISCUSSED ON THE SAME DAY IS A MATTER FOR REGRET. BUT SO FAR AS THE SANATORIUM IS CONCERNED I HOPE THAT NO QUESTION OF RETRENCHMENT OR ECONOMY WILL BE ALLOWED TO WEIGHT WITH MEMBERS IN SUMMING TO A DECISION. I AM QUITE CERTAIN THAT THE VAST MAJORITY OF RATEPAYERS RECOGNISE THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS QUESTION AND THE NECESSITY OF PROVIDING A SANATORIUM WHERE THE POOR CONSUMPTIVES WILL HAVE A CHANCE OF BEING RESTORED TO HEALTH AND STRENGTH. OTHER LARGE CITIES SUCH AS LONDON, LIVERPOOL, MANCHESTER, GLASGOW ETC., HAVE ALREADY PROVIDED SANATORIA FOR THE TREATMENT OF CONSUMPTIVES, AND BIRMINGHAM CAN NO LONGER DELAY IN PROVIDING AN INSTITUTION WHICH WILL TEND TO REDUCE THE ENORMOUS DEATH-RATE FROM THIS TERRIBLE SCOURGE. THE DEATHS THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE FROM TUBERCULOSIS DISEASES IN BIRMINGHAM ALONE DURING THE LAST 15 YEARS TO THE TRULY APPALLING FIGURE OF 15,113, BEING AN AVERAGE DEATH RATE OF 1,007 DEATHS PER ANNUM. OF THIS NUMBER NO FEWER THAN 12,005 WERE DIRECTLY DUE TO PHTHISIS (OR PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS) AND WHAT IS OF STILL MORE IMPORTANCE IS THE FACT THAT THE GREATER PROPORTION ARE WORKING ME BETWEEN THE AGES OF 21 AND 45 YEARS OF AGE, AND IN MOST CASES THE BREADWINNER OF THE FAMILY. SURELY IN THE FACE OF FIGURES AND FACTS SUCH AS THESE, OUR CITY COUNCILORS WILL NOT HESITATE TO SUPPORT THE HEALTH COMMITTEE IN PROVIDING A SANATORIUM WORTHY OF SO GREAT AND IMPORTANT CITY AS BIRMINGHAM.
YOURS ETC. W. F ROBINSON, ALDRIDGE ROAD, PERRY BARR (8TH APRIL) |

THE POOR COMSUMPTIVE SIR, MAY I THROUGH THE MEDIUM OF YOUR PAPER, APPEAL TO ANY OF YOUR READERS HAVING THE RIGHT OF NOMINATION TO A SANATORIUM FOR CONSUMPTIVES ON BEHALF OF A YOUNG WOMAN, A DOMESTIC SERVANT, WHOSE CASE HAS BEEN BROUGHT UNDER MY NOTICE, AND WHOSE ONLY HOPE OF RECOVERY LIES IN HER BEING QUICKLY SENT TO WHERE THE OPEN-AIR TREATMENT IN SUCH AN INSTITUTION AND I SHOULD BE GLAD TO HEAR FROM ANY LADY OR GENTLEMAN WHO WOULD BE WILLING TO NOMINATE HER FOR A BED AT AN EARLY DATE.

Edward Rudd, George Turner, both of Perry Village, were charged with falsely representing themselves to be travelers and so obtaining refreshments from the Scott Arms, Perry Barr on the 22nd ult., Prosecutor Mr F S Pountney, Landlord said that on the date named, defendants said they came from Queen’s Road, Aston, and were consequently served with ale. The defendants said they slept at Queen’s Road, Aston, the previous night. P. C. Smith said about 4.50 on the above named date, he saw the two defendants sitting in the smoke room. In reply the defendants said they had now left Perry Village and lived at Aston. From enquiries he found that they only lived 2 and a half miles away. CHARLES |
Handsworth herald July 3rd
1897 Death under chloroform at
Perry Barr Mr. A Betham (deputy coroner for
South Staffordshire held an inquest at the Crown and Cushion Hotel, Perry
Barr, on Monday on the body of Charles Sempers (40) a timekeeper employed
recently at Holdford Mills and residing at 24 Aston Lane. Deceased’s wife stated that her
husband had enjoyed good health all his life till recently, when he
complained of his teeth and throat.
His jaws became stiff, and he could not open his mouth properly. She advised him to send for a doctor. He was reluctant to call in a medical
adviser, but as he grew no better, he did as she wished. On June 22nd he sent for Dr.
Lewis who visited him the same day, and lanced his tonsils. He also gave him some medicine and advised
him to have two back teeth which had become decayed, drawn out. On Friday last Dr. Lewis accompanied
deceased to a dentist in Edmund Street.
Upon his return deceased went to his bedroom and Dr. Lewis and Mr.
Howard, the dentist who subsequently came to the house, went up to him,
witness following with hot water and towels.
There, together with her husband’s slippers, she left in the bedroom
and went downstairs. That was the
last time she ever saw her husband alive.
She knew that ether would be administered to deceased before the teeth
were drawn, but she did not know he would be given chloroform.
In reply to questions put to her
by the coroner, witness said the death of her husband removed the
bread-winner from the family. She had
two little boys still attending school, and a daughter and they were all
dependent upon deceased. They had been
very unfortunate and her husband had not ever insured his life, nor was he in
any club. She had no money excepting
her husband’s wages for last week, and even the furniture had been procured
on the hire system.
Frederick Charles Raine, Welling Road,
deposed to seeing the deceased shortly before his death when he complained of
the state of his teeth and throat.
Oswald Richard Lewis, physician
and surgeon practising at 15 Aston Lane, Perry Barr, said he attended
deceased on June 22nd and found that he had a large swelling in
the roof of the mouth and the left side of the throat; also a swelling on the
outside of the left jaw. He
complained of pain and inability to swallow.
He lanced his tonsils and let out some blood like fluid with an
offensive smell. Deceased consented
to have two back teeth, which caused him great suffering, pulled out. On Friday last he accompanied him to Mr.
Howard’s dentistry, 2 Edmund Street.
Mr. Howard examined deceased’s teeth and said it was a case of a very
bad abscess and he considered it advisable to give him either, before pulling
them out. It was decided to do this
at deceased’s home. Ether was
administered in the ordinary way, witness having previously examined the
man’s heart and found it apparently satisfactory. The ether did not take proper effect, though he inhaled it for
close upon half an hour. Witness
therefore procured some chloroform from his surgery which was close at hand
and applied a little of it on the corner of a towel. For about a minute deceased breathed quite
naturally, and then made a choking noise at the same time becoming darker in
the face. The chloroform was
immediately removed, and all the usual remedies applied. Death occurred within about a minute and a
half. Everything possible was done to
save the unfortunate man, artificial respiration being kept up for three quarters
of an hour. Witness had since made a
post mortem examination in company with Dr. Douglas Stanley, consulting
physician at the Queen’s Hospital.
Deceased’s heart was fatty and dilated, and his kidneys were somewhat
enlarged, and showed signs of disease.
There was a great deal of swelling especially in the mouth and
throat. The cause of death was
failure of the heart’s action, due to chronic disease of that organ, aided
largely by a great amount of inflammatory swelling in the neck, preventing
the blood passing properly into the heart and else preventing the air from
getting into the lungs. It was
impossible to diagnose the fatty and dilated condition of deceased’s heart
before his death. Witness had
administered chloroform in scores of cases during the past twelve years, and
in this instance he had applied it skilfully. Dr Douglas Stanley corroborated the statement
respecting the post-mortem examination which had been made by the last
witness. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, and exonerated. Dr. Lewis from blame. |

………….
He was a
Christian, he said and the bible bade him not at all. Eventually Perigo consented to kiss the
book. He said that shortly before 10.
o. clock on Tuesday night accompanied by a young man named Joseph Horton, he
was crossing some fields into the Aldridge Road. Nearing the canal bridge they heard a muffled grown and on
proceeding to the canal saw a woman struggling in the water. His companion tried to reach her with his
umbrella but failed to do so. Horton
then went away and he (witness) thought to cross the bridge on the other side
of the canal. He called out to the
woman to struggle on as someone was going round to her assistance. It was afterwards transpired that Horton
had gone to Manor Farm for help.
Witness could not swim and he had known the depth of the water he
would have entered.
Joseph Horton, (23) Perry
Village, who was with the last witness, said that bout 50 yards from the
canal they heard a cry as of someone in the water. They went in the direction of the sound and saw the woman
struggling in the water. Not able to
swim, he went to Manor Farm for help, and on returning with a rake and rope,
he assisted in getting deceased out of the water. He afterwards applied artificial respiration, but without
success. He saw no one else
about. He had a bicycle lamp with him
to light them across the fields.
Police Constable Arthur Clarke said that it was 10.20 when he saw the
body lying on the towing path of the canal.
There were no marks of violence.
He found deceased umbrella lying on the towing path on the opposite
side of the water. Deceased left Mr.
Vaughan at 7.o clock wishing the family “Goodbye” in her usual way. There would be no difficulty in reaching
the towing path from the Aldridge Road.
The water varied from 4 – 5ft in depth.
Dr Percival Adamson,
Birchfield House, said that the post mortem showed that the deceased had led
a perfectly virtuous life. She was
suffering from the Change of Life.
The Jury returned a verdict
of “Suicide whilst temporary insane”, adding a rider that they considered
Perigo and Horton exhibited great cowardice in not making a more determined
effort to recover the deceased from the water, and their conduct deserved
censure. Perigo and Horton were
called into the room and the Coroner, addressing them, said that it was a
cowardly act to allow a woman to drown as they had done. He should disallow the small expenses
which they otherwise would have been entitled to.
A Juror: Perigo is not a
Christian and has not acted as one.
The Coroner: What was your
reason for not kissing the bible?
Perigo:- Because the Bible
said Let their communication by “Yea, Yea and Nay Nay”.
The Jury were. George Vaughan (Church Tavern) Perry
Village (foreman), James Morris, Samuel Bailey, Hammond and John Shephard.
