Perry Barr Mystery

About 3 O’clock, Saturday afternoon two boys employed by Kynock’s Ltd., named ALFRED LANE of 25 Witton Road and HARRY BENNETT, 1, back 258 Witton Road, discovered the body of a newly born male child lying on a piece of unenclosed land between Kenilworth Road and Tintern Road at Perry Barr.  The boys called the attention of a young man JOSEPH TUCKLEY 226, Witton Road and he went and informed the police, and Police Constable WILLIAMS came and recovered the body to the police station in Canterbury Road.  The body which was partly enclosed in pieces of newspaper and brown paper was in a very advance stage of decomposition.  An inquest was held upon the body before MR G C LEWIS Coroner for South Staffordshire at the police station, Perry Barr, on Tuesday.  DR Charles ROBERTSON, Soho Hill, Handsworth, said that the body was that of a fully developed male.

FATAL ACCIDENT TO A PERRY BARR PUBLICAN

Mr. Edwin Hooper (Coroner for South Staffordshire) held an inquest at the Boar’s Head Perry Barr yesterday afternoon concerning the death of William Williams (59) licensed Victualler who until his death was landlord of the same house.  On December 29 the deceased was returning home along the Birchfield Road in a dog trap, accompanied by his wife and two step children.  The horse shied at a tram engine, and clashed on to the footbath.  Deceased was thrown out, and slighted on the head, sustaining injuries from which he died on Wednesday.  A verdict of Accidental Death.

Post – 28th January 1893

Trap accident at Perry Barr

Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Edwin Hooper coroner for South Staffordshire held an enquiry at the Boar’s Head Perry Barr touching the death of William Williams, late landlord of the above house, who died on January 25th.  Mr. J. Ansell watched the case on behalf of the Railway Passengers Insurance Company and the Scottish Employers Liability Company.  Mr. J. Dorsett appeared for the widow of the deceased and also for the executors: Mr A Lowe (Johnson and Co) on behalf of the Central Tramway Company, and Mr. T. G.Tyler on behalf of two of the deceased’s children by his former wife.  Mrs Williams stated that she drove to town in a trap with her husband and her two children on December 19th.  When in Birchfield Road, on the way home, the horse shield at two trams and fell down.  Deceased was thrown out of the trap on to his head.  The horse recovered itself directly and ran away, but was stopped before further damage was done.  The trap was taken back to where the accident had happened.  Mr Williams had been rendered unconscious by the fall, but by that time had recovered.  He was assisted into the trap and driven home by witness.  When they reached home witness found that her husband had sustained a severe scalp wound.  She at once sent for the doctor, and Dr. F. May cam immediately.  Cross-examined by Mr. Ansell, witness said that they had only called at one public house during the afternoon and at the time of the accident deceased was perfectly sober.  Deceased had attended to the doctor’s orders implicitly, with one exception, that being when one day a man was quarrelsome in the bar, he had come, downstairs without his coat on and ordered the man out, saying at the same time “I am not strong enough to put you out!  Amy R Law, step-daughter of the deceased, stated that she went to town with deceased and her mother the day on which the accident happened.  She corroborated that first witness’s statement as to the accident.  Cross-examined by Mr. Ansell, she said that she had never seen her step-father the worse for drink and believed that he was a temperate man.  He had followed the doctor’s orders in every way, with on exception of which her mother had spoken.  Mr Evans, button manufacturer who resides at Kingsbury House, Birchfield Road, stated that on the evening of the 29th December he was returning from town in a tram and when near the Bull’s Head, Birchfield Road he heard the horse stumble.  It quickly recovered itself and started off towards the tram in which witness was traveling.  He jumped off the tram and caught the horse.  Cross-examined by Mr Ansell, witness said that he knew deceased by sight.  Deceased was sober, but, of course, was in a dazed condition.  Dr F H May stated that he was called to see deceased on the evening of the 29th ult.  He found him suffering from a wound on the head and extensive bruises on the back and arm.  He progressed favourably until the 19th January when symptoms of a cold began to show.  This did not shake off, and before long it turned to inflammation of the lungs.  On Saturday evening Dr. Chevasse saw deceased, and until his death both doctors attended him.  He had since made a post mortem examination of the body.  He considered that death was due to inflammation of the lungs, attributable to the severe shock and the scalp wound which he had sustained.  The primary cause of death was the accident.  Mr Ansell in cross examination asked witness if, as had been stated by the previous witnesses, deceased had come downstairs half dressed to quell a disturbance in the bar, and had so caught cold, which brought on inflammation of the lungs, might he had have died from this, and if so, could his death be attributed to the accident?  Dr May still adhered to his statement that the accident was the primary cause of death.  Dr H Gilbert, surgeon at the General Hospital stated that on Saturday last, deceased was suffering from inflammation of the lungs’ he was very ill and there was little hope of recovery.

A serious accident befell a cabman named Albert King of Witton Road, Aston on Sunday morning.  It seems that King was returning along the Aldridge Road from taking a fare home when by some means he ran into a brick wall.  The cab was smashed and king was seriously injured.  A farmer called Charles Winwood who heard the crash came to his assistance and Police Constable Davis and firemen Dix and Morris afterwards moved him to the surgery of Dr Howe, Bevington road.  He was found to be suffering from a sever scalp wound and concussion of the brain, and after his injuries had been attended to removed to his home.

Perry Barr cyclist hurt

Knocked down by a horse

Perry Barr is gaining an inevitable notoriety for cycle accidents, and on Saturday afternoon another had to be added to the already long list.  As a young man of 20 years of age named Arthur Percy Cooper residing at 31 Aston Lane, Perry Barr was cycling along the Aldridge Road soon after two o clock, he came in contact with a horse belonging to Mr Charles Winwood and he was thrown with great force from the saddle. When picked up it was found that the young man had his right leg broken.  It seems that the horse was coming out of the stable of Mr. Winwood to cross the highway into the field opposite when it collided with the cyclist.

Dr Lewis was summoned and he rendered the injured cyclist all the assistance in his power, and on arrival of the Handsworth horse ambulance wagon, which promptly responded to the summons, the unfortunate young man was taken to the Birmingham general hospital.

WRIGHT ANNIE
Amy and Annie

Annie Wright is in the 1901 census as Thomas's stepdaughter and she is 16.  This means she was born in 1885, which is before Thomas and Minnie got married (1890).

Amy Wright was known by Grandma and is mentioned in the family history information, but is not showing on the 1901 census.

This leads me to conclude that Emily was married before she married Thomas and had Annie, but then Thomas and Emily had a child together called Amy.

Dictated by Minnie Maria Wright

My mother died at the early age of 27, not long after my brother was born.
I was quite young but was aware that there was a lot of arguing going on in our house and wondered what it was all about.  Then I realised it was all about my brother and I.
My mother had recently died and the relatives were on about who should take care of us.
We were seperated and sent to live with different aunts and uncles.
Life was very hard.  My aunt Jinny was very kind to me but they kept a fruit & veg shop and my uncle made me work delivering to customers.
My uncle had a pony and trap which he took to the market every day and if he forgot anything he sent me on the trap to fetch it.
I well remember one day the tram came off the lines and it took ages to get it back on.  Consequently I was late getting to school where I was caned for being late.
One day a man approachd me to deliver a note to some one down one of the entries.  Now as I was used to all the names and addresses of residents through delivering green groceries.  I knew it didn't [...] but to humour this mantook the letter the letter up the entry but he barred my exit and took his tie as if to strangle me but I was too quick for him and went between his legs and rushed home.
I can't remember much happiness in my childhood at all I resented being parted from my young brother and his life wasn't much happier either.
