DART                                               12th August 1892

Mr W M Ellis has gone over to the majority.  He was indeed a grand citizen, full of honour, ability and generosity.  As a representative of a generation fast disappearing he was held in esteem and his shrewd wisdom will in places be sorely missed.

Shocking Street Accident.

On Saturday afternoon, between three and four O’clock, a young man named Frank Smith of Winson Street, Winson Green, accompanied by a companion went to catch a tram near Victoria Courts in Corporation Street for the purpose of witnessing a football match.  The conductor, however, intimidated that the car was full, and the men attempted to recross to the footpath.  In doing so Smith was knocked down by a cab which was, it is stated, being driven on the wrong side of the street.  The point of one of the shafts caught him round the neck, causing a severe wound, from which blood flowed copiously.  A police constable conveyed him a cab to the General Hospital.  On arrival, he was in a state of collapse and he was of course, detailed.

BROTHERLY LOVE

James Fletcher of 28 Franchise Street, Perry Barr,  was charged with using threats against Samuel Fletcher.  The parties were brothers and complainant said that his brother had been in the habit of illusing his mother.  Complainant remonstrated with him, and was struck at by the defendant.  In self-defence; plaintiff struck his brother, who threatened to knock his brains out.  Mrs Fletcher corroborated, and the defendant was bound over to keep the peace for six months or in default one month’s imprisonment.
