THE STATE OF THE ROADS

Complaints are frequently made as to the dirty state of the roads especially the Birchfield and Wellington Roads.

Ladies have to take up their dresses and gentlemen to turn up their trousers, if they do not wish to be besmeared with mud.  The cry is “Where is the sweeping machine? Or why do not the Local Board find the unemployed something to do!

Crossing sweepers are prosecuted for soliciting alms, but really if it were not for fear of having the youngsters prosecuted, I should say to them you can make a good living at Perry Barr.  Now Local Board Official wake up and do not let us pay our rates for nothing.

Tucker Fasteners, Walsall Road, will be 100 years old on 7th July 2003......

Hi 60 years ago I started an apprenticeship with a building firm, W C Skinner Ltd on the Walsall  Road

it was this firm that built Geo.Tucker Eyelet at a cost of £75,000, Starting from the church as you wander up the Walsall Road, was The Newhall Garage, where "Dixie Dean" a Stripper had her caravan when she was appearing at the Aston Hipp. then there was if my memory serves me well,  some waste ground up to the river bridge, next was W C Skinner, then another small firm cannot remember who? next to it was the large "Abion"  lorry repair workshop next to that was Perkins, wood turners, then a factory by the name of Evertaut, made office furniture, next to that was Tucker Eyelet's then a bit higher was the Tennis Courts public house, I remember taking a bag of sawdust to a nearby butcher's shop, Clewer's  for which I received sixpence. I also had to go past the Crematorium, to a firm by the name of Mole & Woods, to get petrol coupons for the firm

Hope this may be of interest to you,  regards, Dennis

Thank you Dennis, I welcome everything!!!

The father of Mr Wadham’s was a farmer of the old stamp, fond of a good horse and a bold foxhunter.  He occupied some of the land by Bristnalls end and his widow afterwards farmed at church hill farm for many years, much respected and well known as Mrs. Peggy Wadham’s.  Mr J Wadham’s afterwards purchased wellhead house, Perry Barr and some forty acres of land around it, which continued in the family for many years.  The land was sold to the Calthorpe family and residence and grounds of the Quaker Wadham’s family.

TAKEN ILL ON THE ROADSIDE

Some excitement was created in the neighbourhood of the Zig-Zag bridge, Perry Barr on Saturday evening, when a woman was picked up in a semi-conscious state.  She was removed into Perry Pont house and Dr Lewis and the ambulance was summoned.  The latter was, however, not required as she was driven home in a cab.  Her name was given as Miss Joyce (62 years) living in Holt Road, Aston, and it seems she was taken suddenly ill as she was going over the bridge.

 Accident at Perry Barr

A rather serious accident happened to a lady named Miss Winnie Page, 145, Lozells Road, on Wednesday evening.  Cycling over the Zig-Zag bridge at Perry Barr,  she came into collision with a furniture van and was thrown from her machine.  As quickly as possible she was conveyed to Dr. Lewis's surgery in Birchfield Road, where it was found she had fractured her jaw and sustained serious cuts about her head.  The ambulance van was sent for and in this she was taken to the General Hospital and detained.

AN OLD MAN AND HIS TRICYCLE

Not a little mystery was occasioned in the Heathfield district by the finding of an antiquated type of tricycle lying upset in Heathfield Road by the policemen who was passing along the street at 4.o.clock on Tuesday morning.  The mystery was further deepened by the circulation of stories about an old man having been seen riding about the roads during the past few nights.  On Monday, just before midnight he was seen going through Perry Barr in the direction of Sutton Road and such an incident at that time of night caused a considerable amount of talk amongst those who witnessed his progress.  Some hours later he was observed crossing the Zig-Zag bridge at Perry Village, this time making his way in the direction of Birmingham and after that no trace was found of him.  The tricycle which is an old make of quadrant pattern and fitted with solid types was found lying in Heathfield Road from where it was taken to the Police Station at Perry Barr.  Until Wednesday, no claim had been made, but the old man presented himself that evening and said that he wanted his tricycle.  He told police an extraordinary story.  He said that he was riding home from Bloxwich and Walsall to Warstone Lane, Birmingham and when he got into Heathfield Road, two men, who he thought were cab men, asked him for a ride on his tricycle.  He got off and one got on and rode up and down the road.  Then they broke a tyre, but mended it and began riding the tricycle again.  He then walked away and left it with them.  Although he met some policemen on the way, he did not report his loss and the police are conduction further enquiries.
